What is Minimalism Art?
We might have heard about minimalist living and lifestyle. This means intentionally living with fewer possessions and focusing only on the ones you need.
But it was also an art style and art movement.
Minimalism is an extreme form of abstract art developed in the USA in the 1960s and typified by artworks composed of simple geometric shapes based on the square and the rectangle.
Yes, minimalist art may seem simple at first glance. But there is more to it than that. It asks us to look beyond conventional boundaries and see the essence. Minimalist artists have sought and continue to seek a greater truth, a deeper meaning behind what we see and experience daily.
What cool, interesting, and important things about Minimalism Art?
Minimalism art is not only an extreme type of abstract art that usually is depicted through simplistic shapes and hard edges, all while exposing the essence of the forms and materials used. The movement also challenged preconceived notions of what art is and could be.
You must be asking, What is the main idea of minimalism art? With minimalism, no attempt is made to represent an outside reality, the artist wants the viewer to respond only to what is in front of them. The medium, (or material) from which it is made, and the form of the work is the reality.
Aesthetically, minimalist art offers a highly purified form of beauty. It can also be seen as representing such qualities as truth (because it does not pretend to be anything other than what it is), order, simplicity and harmony.

Famous Artists of the Minimalism Art Period
Now let’s take a look at some of the most well-known artists in the Minimalism Art period!
Donald Judd (1928 - 1994) Judd was a painter until the early 1960s, when he began making work in three dimensions which changed the idea of art. Throughout his lifetime Judd advocated for the importance of art and artistic expression. He wrote extensively on the importance of land preservation, empirical knowledge, and engaged citizenship.
At a time when many artists were working in gestural and expressive painting styles, Judd began working with geometric forms of great architectural simplicity. His work is often associated with Minimalism, although he did not like this term.
John McCracken (1934 - 2011) John McCracken occupies a singular position within the recent history of American art, as his work melds the restrained formal qualities of Minimalist sculpture with a distinctly West Coast sensibility expressed through color, form, and finish.
Agnes Martin (1912–2004) Agnes Martin is best known as a painter of grids, where pencil lines and bands of colour fill square canvases and subtly evoke a variety of emotional states.
Dan Flavin (1933 – 1996) Flavin was an American minimalist artist famous for creating sculptural objects and installations from commercially available fluorescent light fixtures.
Robert Morris (1931 - 2018) He was regarded as having been one of the most prominent theorists of Minimalism along with Donald Judd, but also made important contributions to the development of performance art, land art, the Process Art movement, and installation art. Morris lived and worked in New York.
Anne Truitt (1921 - 2004)Anne Truitt was a major figure in American art for more than forty years, and her bold use of geometry and color signaled a new direction for modern sculpture. Abstract yet rich with feeling, her work is grounded in memories and sensations accumulated over a lifetime.
